Important changes to The Termination of Employment Law (24/1967)
03.08.2016
Area(s) of Practice: Employment and Immigration Law

The amending law was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic on 25 July 2016 and, based on the new provision, an employee who is absent from work due to incapacity for a period of up to twelve (12 ) months, cannot be dismissed during the period commencing on the first day of absence and ending on the last day of a  time-period, estimated by adding the duration of absence and the fourth (¼) thereof.

The previous legislation, which was  in place for decades, determined only a 6-month period of protection.

Our firm is proud to announce that the amending law – known as ‘Maria Eliophotou Law’ -  was the result of several proposals put forward to the Cyprus Parliament, and ratified by the latter, following the successful representation by our firm of Maria Eliophotou, who was unlawfully dismissed by her Employer, when she returned to work after her absence for cancer treatment.
